Crime doesn't stop at borders
Three detectives, one big case

Info

Criminals don’t stop at borders, and neither should the police. “The Team” portrays a group of European police officers fighting international crime throughout Europe. The series is written by specialists Peter Thorsboe andMai Brostrøm (The Eagle, The Protectors) – names that guarantee wellgrounded and vividly inventive cases with complex, stimulating characters.

“The Team” consists of forensics, legal and IT experts, along with profilers and psychologists; their cases take them to Europe’s major cities. The series benefits from Europe’s huge cultural diversity and is shot in original languages. It sheds light into the reality of today’s organized crime, as well as into the fates behind the crimes. “The Team” sees to it that justice wins and the victims’ dignity is restored.

Characters

Alicia Verbeek (34) Starring Veerle Baetens

Alicia Verbeek is a deputy superintendent with the Homicide Department in Antwerp, Belgium.

Alicia is a pattern breaker. She’s part of that wave rolling over Europe of young, not so fortunate women, who understand, that if they want to control their own life, they have to be excellent at school, educate themselves and get a good job. Alicia unveilsimperfections in her own department in Antwerp. Her big trouble with female authorities prevents her from realizing that she’s at risk of being used in a game, much larger than she could imagine.

Alicia is deeply rooted in the dark side of Antwerp. As a policewoman she has been around most criminal settings; she’s been working with victims on both sides of crime.

Alicia grows up in a family consisting of her, sister Fifi and their mother Justine. Sadly enough, Fifi follows her mother’s path and becomes the human face of drugs and prostitution. Sorrow, revengefulness, and bad conscience for not getting her sister out of misery haunt Alicia. And she’s full of anger towards her mother for not taking proper care of her youngest daughter.

Alicia’s relationship to her boss Madame Pernel is a mirror of that story. Every day Alicia is reminded of how difficult life is with family ties that won’t let you go.

Harald Bjørn (48) Starring Lars Mikkelsen

Harald Bjørn serves as Chief Superintendent in the Homicide Department, Copenhagen, Denmark. He is an internationally acknowledged expert in organized crime.

Addicted to his job he works through day and night nearly without sleep, he tends to forget his highly pregnant wife Liv and he doesn’t take care of himself.

Harald is intelligent, quick witted and humble about his societal task. He has a humanistic approach to existence – more than you usually meet in the police force. And when he faces a task, he goes all in. He goes to the core. In his job as well as in his private life. He’s a competent climber and even if he grows wiser with age and takes fewer risks he is still hooked to the adrenalin fix he gets from scaling a giddy mountainside.

At the same time, he is loyal and sacrificial towards the people close to him, to family, to colleagues. That’s what puts him in a tough position when it happens that he’s going to work with Jackie again, as the two had a short but very strong encounter years ago.

Jackie Mueller (36) Starring Jasmin Gerat

Jackie Mueller is a police superintendent with the BKA (German Federal Police), Berlin, Germany. Her previous employment was two years at Europol as an analyst and networker.

She is no romantic regarding the criminals she’s met during the years. In her eyes it is not just the public purse of Europe that is being defrauded a giddy amount of money. It’s also the fact that every single crime has immediate consequences for people in flesh and blood. On the other hand, she’s level headed enough to know that she can’t save the whole world.

The marriage between Elias and Jackie had some rather significant shifts in power balance and Elias suffers from an unspoken jealousy – he knows that Jackie was in New York on a job way back with a Danish police guy. His instinct tells him that his territory is being threatened.

Jackie knows as a police woman that 9 out of 10 killings are committed by a partner. Of course that sort of crime never happens to you, only to someone else, but long kept secrets and bad conscience can have a strong impact on your self-respect.

Marius Loukauskis (44) Starring Nicholas Ofczarek

Loukauskis has always felt as an outsider. He was raised in the former Soviet Republic Lithuania by poor parents together with five siblings. So at earliest age Marius developed the burning wish to get rich, seriously rich, when he grew up. And he grew up very early, as he had to take over the support of the family, by selling goods on the black market to tourists. He was quite successful, but before turning 18 he had found the real gold vein that would show him the way to his fortune: prostitution.

He started out as a common pimp, developed the necessary ruthlessness and an unerring business sense. So he was not without means at the time when the Soviet Union broke down and the state socialism was dissolved. He managed to get his money out of Lithuania to Berlin. All through the 90’s he and his former wife Dahlia made a fortune by bringing thousands of Eastern European girls to the West. She knew Berlin, he provided girls by the dozen. The enormous crush of poor job seeking people from all over the world to the rich North Western Europe gives him undreamt-of possibilities. Today he is a major supplier of organized human trafficking. A modern slave dealer.

Loukauskis knows that people in his position very seldom grow old. He wants to come into the warm. He wants to be accepted, wants civil recognition. And now he is closer to that than ever: Soon the poor boy from Vilnius will be granted a bank licence in the capital of Germany.

Jean Louis Poquelin (40) Starring Carlos Leal

Some people would call Jean Louis a “character assassin”: A journalist, who spends months with a person he is going to portrait to get access to his or her deepest confidence and innermost thoughts. Jean Louis has a reputation for being brutally honest, but also fair and true to his word, so depending on whom he is portraying, his work can be explosive.

Other people would accuse Jean Louis of paying tribute to organized criminals, as his biggest and most important project is a book about the Lithuanian billionaire Marius Loukauskis. A book that becomes his fate.

A random stroll at the marina in Jean Louis’ hometown Antwerp gave him the idea of portraying the owner of the absolutely biggest yacht in the harbour. Sources in the police gave Jean Louis a hint about the profession of Loukauskis and his apparent untouchable position. It piqued Jean Louis’ curiosity and he succeeded in arranging a meeting with Loukauskis. Loukauskis’ vanity to show how much he has achieved from being a poor boy to a billionaire with a mansion in Potsdam is the foundation of a perfect symbiosis between those two men.

For weeks and months they got closer and closer, some even described them as friends. Until in one fatal moment Jean Louis crossed a line that made the generous Loukauskis reveal his true nature and makes him his worst enemy.
